Project: Characterization
of On-Site Retention Pond and Spoils Pile at the Point Beach
Nuclear Plant
Performance Period:
2000, 2002
Description:
An on-site retention pond was identified as contaminated
with low levels of plant-related radioactive materials. ChesNuc
applied MARSSIM techniques for resolving regulatory concerns
at an operating facility. ChesNuc performed a characterization
study to establish the depth and extent of the levels of radioactive
material contamination both in the pond and surrounding environs.
ChesNuc planned and executed the sampling of the pond for
determining its radionuclide profile. A field survey was conducted
of the surrounding environment. Gamma scans were used for
identifying elevated areas; MCNP modeling was used for correlating
a 2X2 inch NaI detector response to 137Cs levels; systematic
sampling was used for model verification. An assessment of
radiological hazards, remediation activities, and regulatory
compliance was completed.
