Project: Decommissioning
and License Termination for the Coleman Thorium Gas Mantle
Manufacturing Facility, Wichita, Kansas
Performance Period:
2002 - 2005
Description:
The Coleman facility manufactured thoriated gas lantern mantles
for over fifty years. ChesNuc was contracted to perform a
MARSSIM-based decommissioning of the site. Scope included
management of the overall decommissioning effort; negotiation
with state regulators; site characterization surveys; development
of building surface and soil Derived Concentration Guideline
Levels (DCGLs); development of a remediation plan; site remediation;
decontamination of building surfaces; identify and excavate
underground contaminated lines; on-site and off-site sewer
line characterization, decontamination and replacement; process
and package all waste for disposal; conduct final status surveys
for remaining buildings and open lands; and develop final
status survey reports supporting license termination.
ChesNuc used its proprietary MARSS
survey and data collection system to facilitate data management,
site characterization, and final status reporting. ChesNuc
managed the demolition of two buildings, provided waste segregation
for disposal (radioactive versus non-radiological disposal);
and performed final status surveys and sampling. ChesNuc decontaminated
two additional major building strucrures; including scabbling
of floor surfaces and removal of contaminated drain lines
and vents. Monte Carlo modeling (MCNP code) was applied to
develop gamma survey correlations between indicator radionuclides
and thorium contamination levels. This correlation technique
was used to provide real-time evaluations to guide clean-up
efforts.
